A passkey is a fast, modern, password-free way to sign in to apps and websites using your device’s built-in security, like your fingerprint, face scan, or device PIN.
Instead of remembering a password, your phone, laptop, or security key proves it’s really you.
Upon a successful login, you will be prompted to create a passkey.
How passkeys work
When you create a passkey:
- Your device creates a pair of keys:
- a public key stored by the website
- a private key stored securely on your device
- The private key never leaves your device.
- When you log in, your device uses the private key to verify your identity.
This means:
- no password to type
- much harder for hackers to steal credentials
- resistant to phishing attacks
What you use to unlock a passkey
Usually one of these:
- Face ID
- Fingerprint
- Phone PIN
- Windows Hello
- Hardware security key
Benefits over passwords
- More secure
- Faster login
- No password reuse
- No need for password managers in many cases
- Works across devices through services like:
- Apple iCloud Keychain
- Google Password Manager
- Microsoft account syncing

- You’re signed in
